Join Us At The Column Awards GALA – Monday February 24th

Column Details

The Column Awards Gala is Monday February 24th at the Granville Arts Center. This year’s special celebrity guest host is Rachel York. This event is a celebration of live theatre in the Metroplex and Plaza is honored to be included. Since opening in 2007, PlazaCo productions have been the recipient of over 40 Column Awards including wins for Best Musical in 2010 for AIDA, 2011 for INTO THE WOODS and 2013 for RAGTIME.

Further, as has been our privilege in the past, PlazaCo’s 2014 nominee for Best Musical – MAN OF LA MANCHA – will be performing a number from the show at the Gala. Additionally, productions from Plaza’s 2013 season of shows received 21 nominations which will be read throughout the evening as winners are announced. Finally, the event is a major fundraiser for Broadway Cares / Equity Fights AIDS with all proceeds donated to support this important cause.

We invite you to join us at the Gala on Monday the 24th. The event is a special evening of recognition of all of the excellent work presented on area stages during the last year. AND by attending and supporting The Column we may express gratitude to an organization that has been a major supporter of PlazaCo almost from the opening of the company in 2007. From the awards we’ve been fortunate to receive as well as the coverage we are given both in the form of critical reviews and in dissemination of press releases, The Column by John Garcia has been a massive contributor to the growth of our nascent theatre company here in Cleburne.

Tickets for the Gala are $25 for General Admission or $50 for Admission to both the main event as well as the Celebrity Reception (where you can meet Rachel York) before the show. Reservations can be made by calling 972-205-2790, by visiting or at the door the night of the show (subject to availability).

We look forward to seeing you there.

The Column Awards – Voting and Nominations Information

Column logo
Below you will find information about the new voting procedures for The Column Awards for this year. Please read thoroughly so that you can be acquainted properly with these new procedures. Voting for this years Column Awards begins Monday (Jan 13th) so this information is particularly relevant.

  • A new “Voting Academy” has been created to select official nominees. This Academy is comprised of people who: (1) Have won a Column Award in the past, (2) Are an Artistic Director of a theatre group which has won Best Musical or Best Play in the past, (3) Are a Column or other local theatre critic, or (4) Are a currently serving Column Awards Board Member. If you meet one or more of the above requirements, you are eligible to register as a member of the “Voting Academy”. Only members of the “Voting Academy” can vote in the first round of voting. Simply follow this link to register as a member of the “Voting Academy”. Once you have registered, an email will be sent to you detailing the first round voting process.**IMPORTANT NOTE** The general membership of The Column votes for the winners from the nominees selected by the “Voting Academy”.
  • “Voting Academy” voting begins Monday January 13th and is open until January 24th. If you are an eligible “Voting Academy” member, we suggest voting sooner rather than later so that you don’t let the deadline accidentally pass you by. As a “Voting Academy” member you must follow the link above to register.
  • We strongly encourage you to vote for those who you think are truly deserving. We do not expect you to vote for a Plaza show just because you have done a show here or because you know us. Vote for what you think is most deserving – we hope you make as informed a decision as possible when voting.
  • Once nominees have been selected and announced, voting in the final round begins January 27th and runs through February 7th. ALL members of The Column are eligible to vote in this final round. To be eligible you must register to vote and obtain a voting code. You can register and get your voting code by visiting here.
  • We ask that you respect the theatre’s neutrality when it come to which shows we support. We are proud of every show we produced last year and support all of them equally. You will certainly have your preferences and we are glad about that.
  • To be very clear, EVERYONE who has participated in a PlazaCo production during the year appears on the ballot in their corresponding category. No one on this initial ballot is an official nominee – this is the ballot that lists everyone in every category not only at PlazaCo, but throughout the Metroplex. Please don’t observe your name on this initial ballot and say you’ve been nominated because that would be innaccurate. The top six vote-getters from this list by members of the “Voting Academy” will be the official nominees which will be announced Sunday, January 26th.
  • We strongly urge you (and all PlazaCo patrons) to participate in the voting process fairly and honestly. Any dishonest activity as related to voting reflects negatively on the theatre. Please consider that when voting and act accordingly. We feel honored when our work is recognized, but only when it is achieved with integrity.
  • The official nominees will be announced on Sunday January 26th, the Column Awards themselves will be awarded at the Column Awards Gala on Monday February 24th. Our hope is that you will choose to attend this event with us. It is always a very enjoyable evening.

It’s PlazaCo’s 7th Birthday!

On November 2nd, 2006 Plaza Theatre Company officially began operations here in Cleburne, TX. We started by producing a three performance weekend of the comedy THE MAN WITH THE POINTED TOES which was presented in the old Putt-Putt building across from the Splash Station. Several of our generous friends helped us by taking part in the show as well as in the small “Pre-Show” we arranged to kick off each performance. It was a make-shift setup at best, but over the course of three performances we played to a total of 220 patrons (which we considered a smashing success). This “Preview Weekend” as we called it, gave us cause to move forward with plans to launch PlazaCo full time which we did in April of 2007 with a production of YOU’RE A GOOD MAN CHARLIE BROWN.

Now 7 years later, Plaza Theatre Company is 2 weeks away from opening it’s 70th Mainstage production – WHITE CHRISTMAS which will open on November 15th. We anticipate the show will play to nearly 4,000 patrons during it’s 5 week run. Along the way we’ve been honored with some great awards, produced some fabulous shows and met and made thousands of new friends, but we always take time to remember our humble beginnings at the Putt-Putt now 7 years ago. To those who helped us launch by contributing to that show – Thank You! And to those who have and continue to contribute to making PlazaCo what it is today – Thank You too! We’re looking forward to another fantastic 7 years in Cleburne.

CASH ON DELIVERY – December 31st thru January 25th

cash-on-delivery-web-logo    A con artist has been duping the Government for years by claiming every type of benefit for fictitious people. When welfare investigators show up, he has to do some very quick thinking to bring these made up people to life. Fast paced British farce at it’s very finest.
THE KING AND I – January 31st thru March 8th

King-and-I-web      Anna arrives at the Royal Palace in Siam having been summoned by the King to serve as a tutor. While seeking Anna’s assistance in changing his image and his ways, the King grows to understand and, eventually, respect Anna in a truly unique and moving love story.
KISS ME KATE – March 14th thru April 12th

Kiss-Me-Kate-web    An ex-husband and wife team are reunited to star in a musical version of Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew”, but off-stage the production is rife with ex-lovers’ quarrels and gangsters looking for kickbacks. Merriment abounds in this most classic of Broadway musicals.

ENCHANTED APRIL – April 18th thru May 10th

Enchanted-April-web    When two frustrated London housewives decide to rent a villa in Italy for a holiday, they recruit two very different English women to share the cost and the experience. There, among the blossoms and sunshine, all four flourish again in ways each never expected.

CAMELOT – May 16th thru June 14th

Camelot-web    Guinevere, King Arthur’s lovely wife, encourages him to establish the Knights of the Round Table. As the Knights grow in fame, Lancelot becomes the most celebrated, but rumors begin to circulate about he and Guinevere. A time-honored tale of love, forgiveness and dignity.
STEEL MAGNOLIAS – June 20th thru July 19th

SM-logo    Steel Magnolias serves up a slice of life in Louisiana that’s as warm and comforting as sweet potato pie. In the haven of Truvy’s beauty salon, six very different women come together to share their secrets and bare their souls, throwing in a little neighborly gossip for good measure. From weddings to divorces, babies to funerals, new beginnings to happy endings, they weather every event in their lives en masse with grace, determination, and perfectly coiffed hair.
SMOKEY JOE’S CAFE – August 15th thru September 13th

smokey_j    Leiber & Stoller virtually invented rock ‘n’ roll, and now their songs are part of an electrifying musical that illuminates the golden age of American culture. Featuring nearly 40 of the greatest songs ever recorded, this isn’t just great pop music – it’s great musical theatre.
FATHER OF THE BRIDE – September 19th thru October 11th

The play that spawned several movies tells the story of a dithering father as his only daughter prepares to wed. As expenses and headaches mount and the big day arrives, will dear old Dad be able to see it through? A gentle comedy to which every father can relate.

LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS – October 17th thru November 15th

Little-shop-web     Seymour works at a flower shop attending a plant he’s named Audrey after the girl he loves. But it’s no ordinary plant – it came from outer space and plans to rule the world. As things get out-of-control, can Seymour stop the plant, save the world AND get the girl?

A CHRISTMAS CAROL – November 21st thru December 23rd

Carol-web    The miserly Ebenezer Scrooge journeys to redemption through the appearance of Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present and Future. With carols of the season throughout, A Christmas Carol is a tradition unmatched for the joy it brings to every holiday season.

It’s time for everyone’s favorite gospel singing family to make an encore appearance at Plaza Theatre Company – and they’ll be back for a limited engagement later this summer. PlazaCo’s most popular production ever will be playing a limited run at the Cleburne Conference Center Theatre from July 18th thru August 3rd. If you’ve seen it before, then you know what all the buzz is about. But if you’re new to SMOKE ON THE MOUNTAIN, then here’s a quick description of this wonderful musical comedy:

It’s 1938 and the Sanders Family have come to Mt. Pleasant Baptist for one of their “Saturday Night Sings”. They bring with them some of gospel music’s biggest hits as well as some down home witnessing which is at times hilarious and at others tugs at the heart strings. Plaza Theatre has produced over 60 shows in over 6 years in Cleburne, and none has ever been as popular and well-loved as this little musical theatre gem.

As mentioned above, the show will play from July 18th thru August 3rd at the Cleburne Conference Center Theatre – the home of Carnegie Players. SMOKE ON THE MOUNTAIN will open the week following Carnegie Players production of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. We express our gratitude to Carnegie Players for allowing us toDSC_6570 “borrow” their home for this performance of SMOKE ON THE MOUNTAIN and highly encourage you to attend both FIDDLER ON THE ROOF this summer, as well as OVER THE RIVER AND THROUGH THE WOODS which opens this weekend. For tickets to Carnegie Players productions, please call 817-645-9255.
